Bike parts and design

There are many parts of a bike and the main parts include the wheels, frame, seat, handlebars and components. However, you could also include safety bike parts which include accessories such as a helmet.

Wheels tend to give the fundamental purpose to the bike itself and due to this that is why a bike is also known as a bicycle. A bicycle is called this as ‘bi’ means two and ‘cycle’ means turning.

A bike wheel is made up of many elements. These include a hub, spokes, a rum, tyre and tube. Each part of the wheel may require different material properties.

The frame is the core to a completely functioning bike. The material selection for this part comes down to both strength as well as weight.

The components are the bikes industry name for the moving mechanical parts. This includes and covers everything other than the wheel, frame, seat and handlebars.

The components of a bike focus on functionality, wear, weight, and cost.

Some component examples include:

  • Brake
  • Crank
  • Front and rear derailer
  • Cassette
  • Chain

Bike design

Any type of bike is designed in terms of what the bicycle is going to be sued for and therefore match the requirements of the bike as well as the design. Majority of bikes require speed, safety, comfort and endurance and therefore when designing a bike this is taken into consideration. However, specific bikes may need specific, additional features.
